Five-point perspective, also known as curvilinear perspective, is a drawing that can illustrate 180 degrees of visual space. It is also a drawing where a scene is contained in a global shape, creating a fish-eye view. In five-point perspective, all vertical and horizontal lines arch, except the vertical and horizontal lines in the center, which serve as the lines leveling the eyes.
Five-point perspective contains vertical and horizontal lines and five vanishing points: center, west, east, north, and south. Drawing arching lines from the northern to southern points, lines become more curved as they move away from the vertical line at the center. The process is the same when creating arching horizontal lines from western to eastern points.
How to Make a Five-Point Perspective Drawing of Buildings
1. Draw a circle and mark the five vanishing points. Then, draw the horizontal and vertical lines.
2. Draw the gridlines. The gridlines from the north and south vanishing points, as well as the west and east vanishing points, should curve and become more pronounced as they extend farther from the vertical and horizontal lines.
3. After completing the gridlines, draw the first building, following the curved gridlines.
4. Then proceed to drawing the next buildings. Note that all lines going towards the picture plane, towards the horizon line, must go straight to the point in the center.
6. Erase the gridlines and proceed to finish the drawing, adding any final details or refinements.
Follow these rules of five-point perspective drawing to make your drawing successful and realistic. For additional references on creating a five-point perspective drawing, kindly check out this video:
